Maybe it's just that I've spent a lot of time in my life dealing with computers and other engineered systems — things that have a consistent, internal logic and have an explicit instrumental function. They are tools that can be used to impart your will on the universe in a small, but direct way.
When I look at the situation we're in, I intuitively search for such tools to leverage but I can't find any. Social systems are too complex, non-linear, and probabilistic for that.
