Text is great because it's information dense; typing is quick. And every modern text editor has autocomplete so you often don't even need to type an entire keyword. A GUI is great for a lot, but it's hard to beat a keyboard at raw data transfer.
It'd be cool to have a CAD-like system for an HDL that's text-based instead of graphical. A tool that not only understands and manipulates the semantic content of a file, but also the geometric and topological structure with the same ease.
