I wonder if the modern conception of "artificial intelligence" is a category error. As in, if being alive is a prerequisite to intelligence, and the entire notion that it should be possible to build an abstract, disembodied intelligence is a non sequitur.

It might be possible to design software that can think, but only by first creating software that is alive. Anything less is just an extension of our own intelligence; nothing more than a tool.
